Beadlock vs Rolled Lip Wheels

One clamps the bead mechanically. One does not. The right answer depends entirely on how low you run your tyre pressure — and how honest you are about it.

This is the question we get more than any other, and most of the answers floating around are tribal rather than useful. Beadlocks are not automatically better. Rolled lip wheels are not automatically cheaper insurance for people who do not race. They are two different solutions to one problem: keeping a tyre on a rim.

Work out which one you need by answering a single question honestly — how low do you actually run your tyre pressure? Everything else follows from that.

The job both wheels are trying to do

A tyre stays on a rim because air pressure inside it pushes the bead outward against the bead seat. That is the whole mechanism on a standard wheel. It works well, right up until the pressure gets low enough, or the side load gets high enough, that the bead can move.

When that happens you either roll the bead — the tyre walks partway off the seat and dumps air — or you unseat it completely and the tyre comes off the rim mid-corner. On a race weekend that is a DNF. On a trail ride two hours from the truck it is a much longer afternoon.

The problem is that low pressure is exactly what you want for grip. A softer tyre wraps around rocks and roots, puts more rubber on the ground, and takes the edge off square-edged hits. Racers chase that. The bead is the thing standing in the way.

How a beadlock solves it

A beadlock stops relying on air pressure and clamps the tyre bead mechanically. On an RWI beadlock wheel that clamp is a ring CNC-machined from billet aluminium, bolted down through steel nut plates in the wheel, squeezing the bead against a machined seat.

Once the ring is torqued, tyre pressure stops being the thing holding your tyre on. You can run the pressure the terrain wants instead of the pressure the rim demands. That is the entire argument, and for a racer it is usually enough on its own.

The 9x9 (4+5) double beadlock takes it a step further and clamps the inner and the outer bead on the same wheel. It also runs a reduced air volume chamber, which keeps PSI more consistent as the tyre heats up over a long moto — so the setup you rolled off the trailer with is closer to the setup you finish on.

How a rolled lip works, and why it is not a downgrade

A rolled lip wheel has no ring. The tyre seats against a rolled edge the way it does on a stock rim. Fewer parts, less rotating weight, and nothing to torque check before you roll off the trailer.

That last point matters more than people admit. Rotating weight at the outer edge of a wheel is the most expensive weight on the machine — you pay for it on every corner exit. A rolled lip front is the lightest, simplest front end available, and plenty of genuinely fast riders choose it on purpose.

RWI rolled lip wheels are built from the same 6061-T6 aluminium as the beadlocks, with the same heat treatment behind the strength-to-weight ratio. What changes is the lip geometry, not the alloy. The R6 is the 10x5 (4+1) front that goes on the MX1 and GP1 race kits, and raw is offered as a real finish option rather than a discount tier.

The maintenance nobody mentions before you buy

A beadlock is a serviceable assembly, and that cuts both ways. It means a bent ring or a pulled nut plate is a parts order from wheel accessories rather than a new wheel. It also means the assembly is yours to look after.

RWI publishes the schedule on the wheel pages: check torque specs after the first ride and every five rides thereafter, and inspect the ring bolts before each race. That is a genuine ongoing job, not a formality, and it is the one real cost of running a beadlock that people forget to weigh. If that sounds like something you will skip, be honest about it now — a beadlock you never torque check is worse than a rolled lip you never had to.

You are allowed to mix

Nothing says both ends have to match, and RWI’s own race kits are built that way on purpose. MX1 and GP1 run a rolled lip front for riders who want the lightest possible front end. MX2B and GP2B step the front up to a 10x5 beadlock for riders who load the front hard through ruts and berms. The GNCC kit is the most aggressive of the group — a beadlock front paired with the 9x9 (4+5) double beadlock rear, for terrain where a rolled bead ends your day.

Because the bolt patterns match across the line — 4/144 and 4/156 up front, 4/110 and 4/115 at the rear — mixing is a fitment decision rather than a compatibility problem. If those numbers mean nothing to you yet, start with ATV bolt patterns explained.

So which one

  • You race, or you drop pressure to find grip: beadlock. This is what the ring exists for and there is no substitute.
  • You ride hard enduro, rocks or deep ruts: beadlock, and look hard at the double beadlock rear.
  • You ride trail and sport at normal pressure: a rolled lip does the job with less weight and no torque schedule.
  • You are chasing the lightest possible front end and not airing down: rolled lip front, and choose the rear on how you ride.
  • You are not sure: run your machine through the fitment guide first, then pick the kit that matches your discipline.
