Goggle Lens Tint Guide

One number tells you almost everything about a lens. Here is how to read VLT, and which tint to have in the bag for the light you are actually racing in.

Vision is a performance part. You can have the best wheels in the paddock underneath you and it counts for nothing if you cannot pick a line out of the shadows at the bottom of a hill. Lens choice is the cheapest performance gain available, and most riders make it by accident — they run whatever tint came in the box, all season, in every light.

This is how to stop doing that. One number does most of the work, four light conditions cover almost every race day, and two lenses in the bag will get you through a season.

VLT: the only number that really matters

VLT stands for visible light transmission. It is the percentage of available light the lens lets through to your eyes. A high VLT lens passes most of the light; a low VLT lens blocks most of it.

That is it. Everything else — tint name, mirror finish, marketing language — is describing how the lens achieves that number and what it does to colour on the way through. If you learn to think in VLT, choosing a lens stops being a guess.

  • A clear lens typically sits somewhere around 85 to 95 percent VLT. It is close to no filter at all, and it exists to protect your eyes rather than to change what you see.
  • A mid-range tint typically lands somewhere between roughly 20 and 60 percent, which is the broad band that covers changeable light.
  • A dark smoke or grey lens for full sun typically sits around 10 to 25 percent, and the darkest mirrored options go lower still.

Why rose and amber work when the light goes flat

Flat light is the worst condition to ride in and the one riders prepare for least. Under heavy overcast there are no shadows, so the ground loses its texture. Bumps, ruts and holes stop announcing themselves and the track turns into a grey sheet you are guessing your way across.

Rose, amber and persimmon tints attack that directly. They filter out blue wavelengths and lift the warm end of the spectrum. Because blue light is what creates most of the visual noise in overcast conditions, taking it out leaves the terrain detail standing out more clearly against everything else.

The important part to understand: these lenses do not add light. They add contrast. That is why a rose lens can feel dramatically better than a clear one on a grey day even though the clear lens is technically letting more light through.

What a mirror coating does

A mirror is a reflective coating applied over a tinted lens. It bounces some light away before it ever enters the lens, which lowers the effective VLT and knocks down glare — useful in bright, open conditions where light is coming at you off hard pack, sand or standing water.

What a mirror is not is a substitute for the right base tint. Judge the lens by the conditions it is rated for rather than by how it looks in the pits, and remember that a mirror pushes an already-dark lens darker — which is exactly wrong for a track with heavy tree cover on one side.

Tear-offs and roll-offs change the equation

Whatever tint you run, you are looking through it plus whatever is stacked on top of it. That is worth remembering when you set a goggle up for a long moto.

  • Standard tear-offs, sold in a 20 pack for the Defiant Pro, cover most race days. A thick stack sits between you and the world, so build it for the length of the moto rather than out of habit.
  • Laminate tear-offs, in a 14 pack, are the answer when roost is heavy enough that you are pulling several a lap.
  • The roll-off system is worth the setup time when the track throws mud — a film that keeps feeding fresh optic instead of a stack you eventually run out of.

Building a two-lens kit

You do not need a lens for every possible sky. Two will cover a season for most riders, and the pairing depends on where you race rather than what looks best.

  1. 01Start with a dark lens for bright sun if you race open tracks, or a contrast lens if you race woods and grey mornings. That is your default.
  2. 02Add a clear lens as the second. It covers night motos, dusk practice, deep tree cover and anything that starts before the sun does — and a clear lens is the one you are most likely to need urgently.
  3. 03Carry both to every race. The light at 8am practice and the light at a 2pm moto are not the same light, and swapping takes less time than one sighting lap.
  4. 04Keep spare tear-offs or roll-off film matched to the frame you actually run.

Keeping a lens usable

  • Do not wipe the inside of a wet lens. Anti-fog treatments live on that inner surface and wiping them while wet is the fastest way to destroy them. Let the goggle dry, then handle the inside as little as you can.
  • Do not store goggles face-down in a gear bag with tools. Most lens scratches are inflicted in transport, not on track.
  • Replace a scratched lens rather than squinting past it. Replacement lenses are stocked as individual parts for exactly this reason.
  • Let a wet goggle dry open and out of direct sun before it goes back in the bag.
